Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know for your visit to Burg Uda

Questions & Answers

The most common questions from our visitors

How long does a visit take?

For the tower climb itself, you should allow around 30 – 45 minutes. If you then wish to walk the Niersauen Trail (3.9 km), add approximately 60 minutes. With a museum visit and the walking trail, families often plan for half a day.

Is admission really free?

Yes – admission to Burg Uda is completely free. However, the Heimatverein Oedt e.V. warmly welcomes voluntary donations, which go directly towards the preservation of the castle. The local heritage museum in the town centre is also open free of charge on the first Sunday of every month.

Is the castle suitable for wheelchair users?

The outdoor grounds around the castle are well accessible. However, the historic round tower is not wheelchair accessible: climbing it requires ascending 123 steps on a narrow staircase. Further details can be found on our accessibility page.

Is there a café or catering on site?

There is no café or kiosk on the castle grounds. However, the outdoor area is ideal for a picnic – feel free to bring your own food and drinks. In the town centre of Oedt (approx. 10 minutes on foot) you will find restaurants and bakeries.

Can I bring my dog?

Yes, dogs are very welcome in the outdoor areas of the castle – please keep your dog on a lead. Dogs on leads are also permitted on the Niersauen Trail. Unfortunately, dogs cannot be taken into the narrow interior of the tower due to space constraints.

What happens in bad weather?

The tower climb is possible even in rain, as the tower is covered. The Niersauen Trail can become muddy in wet conditions – sturdy footwear is recommended. In extreme weather conditions, short-notice closures may occur. For up-to-date information, please contact the Heimatverein.

Can I visit the castle outside opening hours?

The outdoor grounds including the castle courtyard are freely accessible at all times. The tower entrance is only open during regular opening hours (April – October, Sundays 11:00 – 17:00). Special openings for groups can be arranged with the Heimatverein.

Are there guided tours for school groups?

Public guided tours take place every first Saturday of the month at 14:00 (no registration required). Individual guided tours for school classes and larger groups can be arranged by appointment with the Heimatverein. Please get in touch well in advance.

May I take photographs at the castle?

Yes, private photography is expressly welcome. The tower and outdoor grounds offer wonderful subjects at any time of year. For drone flights a separate permit is required – please contact the Heimatverein in advance. Commercial filming should also be arranged with the Heimatverein beforehand.

When does the Burgspektakulum take place?

The Burgspektakulum usually takes place at the beginning of June. Exact dates and the full programme are announced annually by the Heimatverein Oedt e.V. For current information, visit www.heimatverein-oedt.de.

How can I get married at the castle?

Civil wedding ceremonies in the tower of Burg Uda are possible. For date enquiries and all formalities, please contact the Standesamt (Registry Office) of the municipality of Grefrath directly. The castle itself does not provide event logistics – catering and decoration must be organised independently.

How do I become a member of the Heimatverein?

The Heimatverein Oedt e.V. welcomes new members who wish to support the preservation of Burg Uda. Information about membership is available directly from the association: telephone 02158/5273 or via www.heimatverein-oedt.de.
